About the Album

SENiOR YEAR is the first and only album FEENiX has ever released. It's an independent album that is being digitally distributed by Island Def Jam through Tunecore onto iTunes, Rhapsody Napster, and Zune. It was released August 9th, 2011 and is dedicated to the C/O 2012.

SENiOR YEAR is a narrated album about a teenage female discovering herself during her senior year in high school. It discusses her life as a party girl, dating, bad friendships, family probloems and self-discovery.

FEENiX describes her thoughts and feelings behind each track:

Rock Like That: This song was one of the last songs to be written and recorded, yet it became the first song on the cd. When listening to the other songs I knew I needed a song to open the cd that would make the cd feel like it was the last party before the school year began. The beat was created by my half brother Tony Maize. He used a sample from the legendary song "Planet Rock." As soon as he mp3'd me the track I immediately felt this would be the perfect song to bring a hype summer dance feel. The lyrics were based around the idea of just having a good time at a party and bringing together all sides of town without any problems over who claims what.

How You Do Dat: "How you do Dat" is my first single. This song has got me alot of recognition. The hook originally came from a previous song I wrote called "Set it Off". In the first verse of "Set it Off" it says "When I step out my front door the fellas singing like a choir saying dang how you do dat there". A guy named Rico heard the song and encouraged me to make the line "Dang how you do dat there" a hook in some way. So, like 6 months later I received a beat from a producer I was working with named Ray Baker and the only thing that kept coming to my mind was that one line. I decided to try it out and asked a good frind of mine who raps, Yung Gwalla, to feature and it turned out to be a really good song in my opinion. The feeling I get from the song is that makes me feel like no matter where I am or where I go I get all the attention, and as I say in the first verse, I get this attention even though I have a low hair cut, I'm a slim size 5, and I don't share my body with the guys I date.

Take it Slow: I wrote "Take it Slow" for two reasons: 1. I was in love with the beat, and 2. I didn't have a slow dance song. The beginning of the album is centered around one night at a party. "Rock like that" is all about the hype, "How you do Dat" is supposed to signify how all eyes are on me at the party, and "Take it slow" represents how sometimes the best part of the party is not always the hype part, but in this case a slow dance with a strange boy. When writing this song I wanted to do something different from any other song on the album, so I wrote a female/male duet that discusses the feelings they both have when first laying eyes on each other and what they encounter on this slow dance. The song became even more different when my producer "Young Sasso" suggested we should autotune the entire track. It gave it a new feel. This song, to me, changes the view of most young males at a teen party. Instead of making him just look at me like most young males do I decided to make the male different by making him be patient and respectful.

Second Base: "Second Base" is one of my favorite songs on the cd. It's a song I feel many young females can relate to. When writing this song I was a junior in high school and at a point where it was hard to preserve my innocence because there were many pressures in my surroundings that encouraged otherwise. The song is all about a young girl who's in a good relationship where the boy wants to take it to a sexual level and she's describing her reasons for wanting to wait and not giving in. "Second Base" is basically a song that talks about the urge for teens to give in to sex but encourages them not to because of the things that come with such a decision.

Choosing: This song spurred from a night of collaboration with the female group Unique that I often work with. At this time we seemed to be going through the same dilemma or could relate to it. The dilemma was about being in a relationship with someone new and then an ex comes along wanting a second chance and you find yourself debating the between the two.

How Does it Feel: "How Does it Feel" is a song I wrote when I had a friend going through boyfriend troubles. She was dating a young man who was constantly causing her problems. He was either cheating or he'd rather spend time with friends and party instead of spending time with her. So, I sat down and began writting and this is what came out.

Backstabbers: This song was written at a point in my career when I was just becoming a known rapper and it seemed hard to distinguish which of my friends were around for my career or to be a sincere friend. At this point in life it seemed I had a lot of people smiling in my face and talking about me behind my back. I also experienced a lot of friends who would only show up on the weekends when they could get into parties free with me or just wanted to come on trips with me to my shows out of town to see who all they could meet. This song is truly about the people my mom describes being around for a season and not a reason, or temporary friends who do not benefit me in any way.

Feeling Myself: A lot of people were telling me I needed to write a song that addressed my haters. So, I decided to write to "Feeling Myself". I had previously recorded a song to this beat, but I didn't feel it did the beat any justice, and I knew I wanted to rewrite something to it. When I was approached to make a song to address the haters I ran across this beat in my cd book and automatically knew it was the right beat for that purpose. It had a swag feel to it which gave me the idea of the hook. I knew I wanted to address all those backstabbers I had written about before and address their topics of conversation about me. I had just been introduced to a group by the name of 365sk and I collabed with them on some of their music. To me they had the talent and swag it took to deliver on the song and next thing you know we recorded a song that had a lot of teen clubs really feeling it.

To the Top: This was the first song I ever recorded in a studio. I was just beginning at 16 and I was so anxious to be successful in the music business. A lot of people expected me to be a soft little girl so I wanted to give them a song that showed them I was ready to hang with the big boys. I worte this song in like an hour and went to Montgomery, Alabama where I lived most of my life and recorded it that weekend. The song is basically about how I'm ready to make it to the top and why I'm capable of doing so.

Letting Go: "Letting Go" is the last song I recorded for my cd and I knew I had to address the audience in a way I never had. I decided to make it based on my life and the emotions I felt growing up. This song is the dearest song to me on my album because this is the song I discovered myself through and really let go of a lot of things that had been affecting me troughout my entire life. The message in this song is to help people realize that sometimes we hold on to the things that hurt us so long that they began to cripple us and bringing nothing more than fear. This songs sends the message that once you let go of those things that hurt you, you will discover a new, better, person within and find yourself happier than you were ever before. This song gives me a peace of mind I hadn't felt in a while and is a reminder that the things that hurt me didn't break me; I'm still living and those things only made me stronger.
